With shorter days and longer nights upon us, it’s the perfect time to think ahead to next year’s sun-filled travels. South Africa, particularly the Western Cape, is ideal to visit between January to March. Visit South Africa with Africa Collection and you’ll experience an eclectic culture, beautiful landscapes, and the thrill of encountering wildlife in its natural habitat. You can also sample some of the finest dining and wines available for unbelievable value in this part of the world.
Here are some of my personal highlights from Cape Town through the Garden Route, a tailor-made Africa Collection itinerary.
Cape Town
The Waterfront
This cosmopolitan city really does have it all, with world-class dining, music and culture in abundance. Both the revolving cable car to the top of iconic Table Mountain and a ferry trip to historic Robben Island – the site of Nelson Mandela’s 27-year incarceration – are a must. Stroll along the vibrant Victoria & Albert waterfront with its stylish boutiques, street markets and International restaurants.
The Winelands
Schoone Ort Country House Hotel, Swellendam
Driving east from Cape Town, you are soon deep in The Winelands and some of the most spectacular scenery you’ll ever see, peppered with English Colonial and Cape Dutch architecture. You’ll love your stay at The aptly named Schoone Ort (Beautiful Place) Country House Hotel.
A Golfer's Delight
For any golf enthusiast, South Africa is pure paradise. With over 500 courses along the Garden Route, whether you want just a couple of rounds or a different course every day, we can weave your wishes into your itinerary. The Fancourt Hotel is considered one of South Africa’s most prestigious golfing locations. Set in lush countryside in the heart of the Garden Route and framed by the majestic Outeniqua Mountains, it has three championship golf courses designed by Gary Player.
The Great Karoo
Even veteran visitors to South Africa like myself never failed to be surprised by this country. There is always more to see and experience. Venture off-the-beaten-track into The Great Karoo and discover dramatic semi-arid landscapes and vegetation in total contrast to the lush green of the Garden Route. Take a sundowner tour into the heart of Camdeboo National Park and overlook the Valley of Desolation – a miniature Grand Canyon, one might think!
Also in the Great Karoo is the award-winning Samara Game Lodge set in acres of breathtaking wilderness. Every safari experience is always awe-inspiring and completely unique, but here, the chance to track cheetahs on foot is a truly unforgettable experience.
Africa Collection is our preferred partner for Africa and Indian Ocean itineraries. They have a range of self-drive and guided itineraries, all are tailor-made to suit your individual preferences.
