Yvonne in the Peaks of Switzerland

Switzerland is a land of incredible rail journeys, sumptuous resorts and fairytale hotels, and has something to offer the traveller at all times of the year. Visit Switzerland with Classic Collection and you’ll be awe-struck by the astounding amount of beauty in this small country.

These days, there’s little need for advanced mountaineering skills in order to explore the country’s most adventurous and sublime landscapes. Be whisked up to the peaks in the comfort of glacier express trains, cable cars or historic cog-railways with a kirsch-laced hot chocolate in hand.

Here are my personal highlights from my recent trip to Switzerland.

Zermatt

This charming, car-free village nestled in the shadow of the Matterhorn is the highest resort in Europe. Development has been limited simply because the village cannot expand out of its cosy valley, and architecture is limited to the classic chalet style. Dusted with snow and lights – it’s a truly magical sight to behold as you pass through in a horse-drawn carriage.

In Zermatt, you’ll find splendid culinary options, including 2 Michelin starred restaurants.

Stay at Beau Site Hotel & Spa, a belle-epoque resort with commanding views of the Matterhorn.

The Glacier Express

There are other, faster ways to travel between Zermatt and St Moritz, but there’s no doubt about which is the most beautiful. The Glacier Express is possibly the world’s slowest Express train, but why rush through such sublime scenery?

St Moritz

Famous playground of the rich and famous, there is no shortage of 4 and 5-star hotels and fine dining options here, with top chefs flying in from around the world in peak season. It also has 320 sunshine days a year. There’s plenty to do without wearing skis here, whether ice-skating or sailing on Lake St Moritz, boutique shopping on Via Serlas or simply watching the world go by from a cafe.
